Kibby is a sweet, gentle, and affectionate young dog. Despite not having the easiest start in life, he loves people and is eager to please. Kibby is smart and food motivated, so he picks up new skills easily. Weve been going to weekly training class and hes doing quite well. Kibby knows sit, paw, down, and touch. He walks well on an E-Z Walk Harness and enjoys going on leisurely strolls where he can send and receive pee-mail. He doesnt chase squirrels or birds, but when on leash, he can be reactive to other dogs. We are working on training to ease Kibbys reactivity, and hes been making good progress. Kibby does much better meeting dogs off-leash, and he enjoys socializing and playing with other dogs. Kibby does have a very physical play style, which some dogs find off-putting. When he meets a dog who likes to play rough and rowdy, his whole demeanor lights up and you can tell hes having so much fun. Since coming to live with us, we have gotten Kibby 90% house-trained (he was not house-trained or crate-trained at his previous home) and has had a few accidents which we attribute to his separation anxiety. We are working with our veterinarian on treatment and behavior modification to help reduce his anxiousness. Weve been working on getting him to associate the crate with good things: he knows that mealtimes happen in his crate, so he goes eagerly in when he sees us carrying the bowl of food. He also will bring a Kong or a Nylabone into his crate on his own and just chill out. Hes made a lot of progress with the crate, but for now we keep him baby-gated in a room by himself when we go out. When we got Kibby, he had a severe bacterial infection on his back, that likely was brought on by allergies, although we are not sure yet what he is allergic to. That is something that were also working on with our veterinarian. The most important things for Kibby to have in his forever home are stability, consistency, and patience. Kibby lives with three smaller, older dogs, and he is deferential towards them. He also lives fairly peaceably with our four cats, although he will pounce at them sometimes and seems to get unnerved when they stare at him. While Kibby does well with our pets, we think hed prefer to be on his own or with one other dog. Kibby needs a dog-savvy owner who will continue training with him and working on his reactivity, and help him get more comfortable in his own skin. Because he has had issues with jumping and mouthiness, he needs to go to a home without children. As part of our training, we are teaching him that these behaviors are not acceptable, and hes making progress. We believe these stem from excitement and nervousness, not aggression. To be on the safe side, though, we think a home without children is best. Kibby is not a demanding doghe seems to really just want the simple things in lifea comfortable place to sleep, a quiet home, and a kind, patient human to understand him.
