01/28/13 - Maggie is doing great. We love, love, love her! The first few days were a bit trying as Maggie was very overstimulated. She was like a very tired toddler who refused to relax/nap because she might miss something. She has since learned her dog friends who she adores will always be here and has settled into our routine. She is actually pretty mellow for a pup of her age. Don't get me wrong, she has her moments but generally after some boxing/wrestling with the other dogs she settles down for a nap. If we are busy she is also very good about occupying herself with a toy.
Maggie would bark in her crate when she first arrived, usually about 10 minutes or so at bedtime before she would give up. The length of barking decreased slowly over the last week, then she went to no barking, then a few minutes of whining. Finally last night not a PEEP! Miss Maggie just wanted to see if we would give into her antics. It will be important her new family doesn't give into her demands and with some patience she will give up. Maggie has NO issues with being crated, she just needs to learn she won't get her way. She sleeps soundly on her blankets and a big stuffed duck she came with.
Maggie has had some accidents in the house which is to be expected between the extremely cold weather and all the changes she has been through. Maggie gets along well with everyone she has met both human and canine. Definitely no socialization issues with this girlie. She responds quite well to some signs and we are working on some new ones. Maggie seems to be a fast learner and is very food motivated so training is a breeze. She also responds well to praise which in her case is a thumbs up sign. Maggie is well behaved for her age. She will grab a tissue out if the garbage can, steal a sock out of the laundry room or jump up on the counter to see if she can score a snack but that is about it. Today she poked her head into the bathroom garbage can to see what she could find, I gave her the hand signal for no and she stopped and walked away. Impressive! Of course being a pup she tried again a few minutes later when she thought I wasn't looking!
Maggie is being spayed tomorrow (1/29) then will be ready for her forever home. She is sweet and cuddly and will make a great addition to a very lucky family. Maggie will thrive in a home with another playful dog. She has really learned a lot from our dogs and looks at them to see what she should be doing. More updates and pictures coming soon.
01/19/13 - Miss Maggie has arrived at her foster home. She is just a wonderfully sweet little boxer girlie! Maggie was purchased as a young pup (she left the "breeder" at just 6 weeks old) it became apparent to her family very quickly that she is deaf. As much as they love Maggie they decided it would be best for her to come to SCBR to be placed in a home with another dog and someone who is home most of the time. Maggie is up to date on shots, has been on monthly heartworm prevention, is crate trained and housebroken. She does know some signs as well and we will be working on hand signals while she is at her foster home. She is very friendly and sweet. It is apparent her family took great care of her.
Maggie hasn't been here very long but I am sure she is going to be a great foster girl. She met the other dogs briefly and was thrilled with her new doggie friends. Tomorrow we will let them get to know each other better and play in the yard. More updates coming soon.
